Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

It’s St. Patrick’s Day … a holiday in which the Irish celebrate their heritage and the rest of us bask in the fun! Last week, my friends and I went on a bar crawl through our local neighborhood, decked out in green gear and lots of little tchotchkes to add to the fun! It was great to have a night out with the girls and catch up. We started our afternoon at 2 p.m. and I feel the “fire” quickly burned out at our third pit stop where everyone started looking more tired than drunk on the Irish spirit. At one point, my friend and I headed to Starbucks to secretly grab coffee and the re-join the troops at the bar. Is this a sign we’re all getting older?

Chicago is a hub of all that is Irish. We dye our river a brighter green than it normally is:

We used to host a South Side Irish Day Parade, where half of the city would travel to the Beverly neighborhood for a huge parade, and tons of tons of green beer, bar crawling and other ruckus. Because of the mass amounts of people that have attended in years past, the neighborhood cannot support that type of event. So the parade has thus turned into the South Side Irish Family Fest…which does not appeal to the normal parade party-goer who is looking for a drunken good time. A lot of people in the “Chi” are upset.

I like St. Patty’s Day a lot and in the past have had some amazing nights out with friends. I think one of the best parts is that it is one of the holidays right before Spring officially hits…so that means warm weather is on its way. How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Break out the green beer, soda bread and stock up on green food coloring to add to your favorite treats and enjoy this fun day of the year! Slainte!
